Errands to run and things to shop for and things around the house... I was so wound up that I didn't get to sleep until after nine this morning. I do "modern art" on a sporadic basis and I know that it's not a Renoir, Monet, Rembrandt, etc., but it's still fun, relaxing and something that I can enjoy for years afterward. However, that being said, I must agree with Matt Margolis: much of modern art is garbage. This Piet Mondrian hung in a presitigious museum for years. No one noticed that it was hung UPSIDE DOWN because you can't look at it and tell which side is supposed to go up. The lines didn't speak. The colors kept their secret. The canvas didn't hold a clue (an arrow telling them which side to put up). IMHO, when someone paints a whole canvas white (or blue, red, yellow, or puke-colored) for instance, or a bunch of vertical and horizontal lines, with nothing else, it's nonsense. It's not art, it's a poseur, someone who had nothing else they could think of doing to be more "avant-garde" than the next poseur. That kind of stuff is garbage. There are good pieces of "modern art", IMHO, and those pieces will hold your attention and please the eye. Some pieces make you want to keep looking at them, exploring them, thinking about them. I'm not saying that mine do; they are not museum worthy. However, those "good" pieces of "modern art" -- as few and far between as they may be -- I will endorse and stand up for because that's my right and, as a fellow artist, it's my delight.
